New Dirty Dozen/Clean 15 Released!

EWG has just released the newest version of it's shopper's guide, which lists the Dirty Dozen--the 12 fruits/vegetables with the highest levels of pesticides and the Clean 15-- the 15 fruits/vegs with the lowest levels of pesticides.  You can get a look at the new list HERE.  There are some new additions to the list.

There has been a lot of discussion lately on the merit of these lists, the Clean 15 in particular.  I think some people feel that it does not encourage people to buy all fruits/vegs organic.

My personal opinion is that this negativity creates a very elitist attitude in regards to organic produce.  It is important that people realize that every purchase is a vote.  When we buy organic, not only does it benefit our health, but it also shares our commitment to organic as consumers.  However, it is not realistic to think that everyone will or can have an all-or-nothing approach to organic food.

The Dirty Dozen/Clean 15 allows people with limited budgets or limited access to organics the power to make educated decisions on what to feed their families.

I try to buy the Dirty Dozen as organic.  When I cannot find it--or afford it--I try to avoid those things, perhaps substituting with items on the Clean 15.  I also try to consciously highlight as many of those items as I can in my own garden.

When our budget is tight, I often buy items on the Clean 15 in non-organic form.  (Like my avocados I got at Aldi this week for $.25 each!!)  However, when those items are available for a similar or slightly higher price (or when I have a great coupon), I will buy them organic--for my health, and for my vote!

The lists can also be used to help people with limited access to organics learn to utilize more of the Clean 15 in their diets and avoid the Dirty Dozen.

Do these lists effect your shopping habits?

Lots of Printable Organic Coupons!

Earth Fare has a whole list of printable coupons for natural and organic items on its website currently.
Some are store coupons and some are manufacturer's coupons.  Those that are manu. q's can be used anywhere.  Most have an expiration date of sometime in July.

So, how to tell if it is store or manu?  Anything that is the Earth Fare brand is obviously a store coupon.  For the rest, you can choose all the coupons you would like.  Btw, you can print as many as you want, so definitely print all you might use between now and July.

After you select your coupons and hit print, it will open two more windows.  The one on top is your printer box.  If you close that, you will then be able to scroll through the list of actual coupons and look them over.  If it is a manu q, it will say "manufaturer's coupon" straight across the top of the q.  Also, store coupons have short numbered barcodes with something like "PLU 8111111".   The Newman's Own is a store coupon (whaaa).

So, if you see a lot of coupons in your list that you don't want to print, just close that box and refresh the Earth Fare coupon page and select the ones you want.  Then choose to print and go from there.  Each coupon prints on one page, so save paper by flipping your paper over and printing on the bottom too--just don't overlap your q's!

When they print, there is a header that says redeemable only at Earth Fare.  Up to you, as they are manufacturer's coupons and so technically can be used anywhere accepted.  And, that part is cut off when you cut out the coupon.  I interpret it Earth Fare using the coupons to entice your business--however, the coupon is not designed to only be used at one store.   Much like the manu. q's that have Target or Schnucks logo on them, etc.

And one last nugget of info--  My CVS has KIND bars on clearance, so I am going to take that q over and scoop up a bunch!

I did this today.  The dish detergent is $2.49, so only $.49 after coupons.

CVS: Shopping Idea

Anyone else shopping at CVS lately?  The last two weeks have been pretty great with the $1 off CRTs that have been printing every day.  Below is a quick description of what I was able to do with some of these store coupons.  The scenario is based on the promo running for P&G products -- Buy $25 and receive $10 ECB (includes Puffs, Charmin, Bounty and Duracell). Let me know if you have any questions about any of it.  What have you been able to find at CVS or Walgreens lately?

So here is what I did yesterday.  It is very YMMV.  I read how some people were able to use the $1 off skin care CRT on other brands (because it states $1 off CVS Skin Care Purchase-- rather than "$1 off CVS Brand" like most CRTs).  I used it on the Dial deal.  So then yesterday I thought--HEY!  Why not on the Puffs with lotion?  So I went and asked my cashiers.  They were really sweet, although a little skeptical, but said they would try it.

I bought 6 boxes of Puffs with lotion.  I used my VocalPoint q's: $1/1 and 5 for $.50/1.  I then gave her 2 $1 off skincare CRTs.  Went through great!  I then had another great idea and said--Hold on and let me get some TP too!   She let me grab one of the packs of Charmin (that qualify for PG ECBs).  I gave her four more CRTs (to use one for each box of Puffs), which created overage to go toward the TP.  I then used some ECBs and only paid $1.XX for all of it.  Best part-- on my receipt it shows $8 more till I get the $10ECB reward!

So today, I went, scanned my card and got my daily 2 CRTs.  I took it and another skincare CRT I had left and bought 2 more boxes of Puffs.  They were free and now my receipt says $6 until ECB reward!!!   I will probably buy some batteries to finish it off, just have to get a hold of a $2 off coupon.

New Natural Food List Available for Download

The Natural Food Connection has just released a new edition of The Natural Food List.
You can download it HERE.  They also share coupons, deals and offers daily on their website or Facebook page.

The first few pages of the guide provide coupon codes or other deals on natural living items.

Starting on page 10 is an in-depth guide to avoiding GMOs when buying food.

I found it a very interesting guide.  A couple points I was not aware of are:

--There is no GM (genetically modified) popcorn sold in the US, as well as no GM blue or white corn.

--Also, very few fruit and vegetables in the US are genetically modified, with the exception of papaya.

Feelin Some CVS Love

Up until lately, I have not lived close enough to a CVS to really get a roll on the system.  Well, now that I am less than 5 minutes from both CVS and Walgreens, I will say with just a hint of embarrassment, that I have been there almost every day--at least the last week or two.

If you aren't too familiar with CVS, it uses a card to keep track of your rewards and purchases.  There is a scanner/coupon machine in most stores that allows you to scan your card once a day and spits out CVS coupons.  They can be different for every person, but everyone gets the last two coupons (or often the only two--I rarely get any others) of the day.  This week they have been $1 off any CVS paper product AND $1 off any CVS skincare product.  Since both of these coupons can get you free items, I am trying to scan my card everyday.

Here are some ideas to maximize these CRT coupons.  Paper product can be anything: single TP roll, single paper towel roll, notebook paper, tissues, etc.  Skincare:  there is a cocoa butter tube for $.99, or look for lip balm, trial size lotion, etc.   Single rolls of TP will be 2/$1 next week!  That's what I am saving for.  Either 2 rolls for each of my coupon, or overage!!! (not sure yet if it will work for overage--plus I can always use more TP)

CVS has also been really good about sending out $5 off $25 coupons lately (register your card online and sign up for emails).  I have been using these CRTs that get me free stuff to help reach my total.  The $5 off, if given first, is before all other coupons.  Sweet!  Last week I was able to get tons of shampoo, cereal, gallon of milk, etc. and paid $1.44.  Got back a $3 ECB! (ECBs are like register rewards)   This happened because of the $5 off coupon and all the CRT coupons I had been saving up.  Another tip:  I have been told that some CVS stores are willing to take the CRT coupons at least a week past the expiration--so if it's a good one, give it a shot!

Walgreens Deals: Emergen-C, Tropicana, Kashi

Walgreens has some deals of note this week.

There is a $5 off Emergen-C coupon in this week's ad.  If you received the $2 off coupon from Emergen-C by email a couple weeks ago, you can stack these together.  My store has it priced at $11.99 ($13.99 for the Immune Defense).  That is $7 per box with just the store coupon (good deal.) and $5 per box if you have both q's! (great deal!)

Tropicana is on sale 2/$6, plus buy 2 and get a $1RR.  Did you get the BOGO coupon from their facebook offer last week?  This is what I did:   Bought a Tropicana OJ and a Trop50.  Used a $1/1 Trop50 AND a BOGO any Tropicana.  After RR, they were $.50 each.  I then bought two more Tropicana OJ and used another BOGO (there were two prints)--in a separate transaction to get another RR--these were $1 each after RR.  Plus, after buying these cartons, you can enter the Tropicana Rewards codes

If you did not get the BOGO last time, Hip2Save just posted a deal on getting a BOGO coupon for Trop50.  This deal is good today only.  It is the deal of the day, so maybe there will be similar deals in the future.  The coupon expires on April 21st. (so if you're like me, with 4 cartons of OJ, you may want to hold off on this one)  =)

Kashi cereal is on sale for 2/$5 this week.  (Don't have to buy 2)  There has been a $1/1 Organic Promise (that's the shredded wheat variety) coupon available on All You Online.  Or, if you are a VocalPoint member, you may have received the $1.50/1 coupons for Heart to Heart.  Makes it $1-$1.50 per box.
