Where Have I Been?!

So, last week I came down with strep. Ugh! That wiped me out pretty much the whole week. By the time I was feeling better, I went out of town for the weekend. Now, since I have been back, I have found it difficult to get back in the swing of being on the computer. I really enjoyed the break. So, we shall see how often I find to dig for deals.

I see change coming quickly in our future, so that may also decide the fate of this blog. I'll keep you posted.

Guest Post: Local Ad Match

Regina has put together an ad match for us again. Thanks R!

I haven't done Walgreens or Target yet...)

A little about my shopping habits: I mostly buy produce. Since I make most of my own foods (like bread, pancakes, side dishes), buy locally as much as is reasonable, and avoid dangerous ingredients (like aspartame, MSG, artificial color, hydrogenated oils), most things at the grocery store are ruled out. But I'm adding some things to the following list that are good buys, even if I may not purchase it myself. I shop for produce using Dr. Weil's rule, choosing what is available in this order: Fresh Organic Produce, Fresh Local Produce, Fresh store produce, Frozen Organic produce, Frozen conventional produce, canned or bottled or juiced produce last.
Below are the lowest advertised prices for sale items.

To use this list:
1. take it to each store listed, the lowest priced item is listed under its store
2. take it to Wal-Mart, buy what is listed and tell them to ad match at the register (note that WalMart does not carry all brands, such as Best Choice or Always Save)

UPDATE on SmartSubs (and cheap coconut oil)

Well, so far so good! Check out the previous post on SmartSubs for links and info.

I ordered the Garden of Life coconut oil for $5.94. All shipping was free--shipped UPS. I ordered on the 10th. It was shipped the 15th and will be here on the 20th. My credit card has not yet been charged, so I will be keeping an eye on that.

Now for the free trial I was automatically signed up for. It actually sounded interesting, but I could not get signed in. After two emails requesting assistance, I just figured I better go ahead and cancel before I forget. I just called the toll-free number, told them to cancel, and it was done. I will also be watching out for any charges when the actual 14-day period is up.

But, if no weird charges show up, I think I will probably order again. Maybe have DH order with another email address--getting more coconut oil.

If I find something with a different offer, I can go ahead with that one with same info I just used.
For example, there are tons of Melissa and Doug toys, etc. that provides a free trial to Clever Island--a kids learning site.

MIA

I have been pretty sick the last few days. Getting on the computer has not been that appealing--as I can barely get off the couch. My kids have watched way too much TV, and we have not had anything good to eat for awhile either. My house is a mess. It will be good to get things back to normal.

Since we accidentally skipped 6 mo. pics for DS, I might use this and capture 9 mo. pics instead!

SmartSubs.com-- Good way to buy cheap?

I found a website called SmartSubs.com that offers products deeply discounted, if you will agree to sign-up for free trial offers.

What led to this discovery was my hunt for a bargain on coconut oil. SmartSubs has Garden of Life EV Coconut Oil 16 oz. for $4.94 That's a great price! The catch is that you will be signed up for a free 14-day trial to a Savings Club. You can cancel at any time. Also, there are no shipping or tax fees! You can only sign up once for each offer, so, if you wanted to get the Chia Seeds 16 oz. that are only 5.94, you could not get them at the same time because they both have the same offer attached. I have heard you can order them separately though, using different email addresses. (I may try this after I see how the first order goes)

So, I am trying this out! I ordered the coconut oil. After I get my enrollment info, I will cancel. I'll let you know how it all goes. I did read reviews on the site and they (of course) are mixed.

Oh, and BTW, if you happen to find something more expensive you might try the code 5OFF50 to save $5 off $50, or MYSUBS (this one may be expired).

Walmart Clearance

I was at the Walmart on Kansas Expwy yesterday. They seem to be doing an entire remodel of the store. There were several aisles of clearance. Most not too deeply discounted yet. There were tons of natural health and beauty brands, i.e. Burt's Bees, Giovanni, Alba Botanica, etc.

On a slightly unrelated note, I was wondering how the Giovanni compared with Frontier prices. Walmart had it regularly for an 8.5 oz bottle of shampoo at $7.xx, clearanced at $5.xx
Frontier price is $4.77
HOWEVER, you can actually buy it by the gallon from Frontier! Doing so, would make the price (gallon= approx 15- 8.5oz bottles) $2.89/8.5oz bottle
I may just switch to Giovanni! (although for shampoo & conditioner it would be close to a $90 investment!! I better try out one bottle first, **wink**)

Oh, and Walmart had the Walmart brand Organic Coffee (just one style--Medium Roast) for $4.77 (normally $6)

Target to Start Price-Matching

Target is supposed to start price-matching on Sunday.
There should be more info in the weekly ad.
They will price-match like items. You have to bring in the local competitor's ad.

I found a use for my raw cream cheese

So, I made whey and cream cheese from raw milk this past week.
The cheese is quite sour and I wasn't sure what I could get away with using it in.
I did mix it with some homemade strawberry jam, and the kids liked that.
However it was still pretty sour.
Tonight I made skillet cornbread, but half-way through I realized I had no milk!
I used the cream cheese watered down a little.
It turned out pretty good!

I hope to make sauerkraut and pickles with the whey this week. (or as soon as I have enough cukes accumulated)

I really hope we get the $1 off Tyson fresh chicken. I have a feeling in won't be in my paper, but maybe?

Do you see anything good?

Jessica reminded me about the canning jar and lid coupons. How excellent! Try to hold onto them to use with a sale if possible. It may depend on the expiration date, but I bet canning supplies will start going on sale in the next month?

How to use your Kashi Q's

I went to Target this weekend and ended up with 6 boxes of cereal, 2 boxes of granola bars, 2 boxes of crackers, and 2 packs of Solo Bare plates for $1.84

Here's how:

Buy 2 boxes of Kashi cereal-- use 2 IP q's for $1.50/1 and a $.50/1 Target q and a B1G1 Free Target Q: gives you $.84 overage!! Do this for as many q's as you have.

Use the overage to buy Kashi cereal bars. Buy 2 and use the IP $1.50/1 for each, and use the Target q for $1/2. On sale for $2.50, so price could be $1 for 2 (minus the $.84 from above).

Also, look for peelies on the cereal you are buying. Many boxes have peelies for $1/1 on crackers, etc. Buy 2 boxes of crackers for $2.50 ea. Use 2 -- $1/1 q's and Target $1/2 q = $1 ea.

I knew I was saving those Kashi coupons for a reason!!

Grocery Highlights: Week 7/1--Updated

Price Cutter

Wow! PC is running some great deals this week. LINK to ad.

Here is what I noted as good deals:

First off, there is a coupon in the ad for a $10 mail-in rebate off $10+ purchase of steak or seafood!!! You need to get the form at the Service Desk.

Creekstone Farms Beef Top Sirloin is $4.99/lb (I'll prob. get as close to 2 lbs. as possible)

Kraft Dressing $1.57, Use $1.50 or $1 off q's

Pace Picante 10/$10 use This is for the little jars, and the q's don't work =(

Borden Specialty Sliced Cheese (DH loves pepperjack) $1.79, use $1/1 q

Brown Sugar 2/$3 (there is a $.65/2 q on smartsource.com right now--Found $.30/1 insert q--doubles))

Smart Chicken, whole fryers $1.69/lb

Sargento Cheese Slice 2/$5, use $.40/1 q = $1.70ea

Farmland Bacon 2/$5 use Farmland q's (could be little as $1.50ea) Includes All Natural style (you just get 12 oz, instead of 16 oz pkg) This is a stock-up price.

Johnsonville Brats, Franks and Sausage are 2/$6 lots of q's, inc. for Turkey Sausage, etc.

Grande Tortilla Chips are 2/3.50 A few had $2 off Beef when you buy 2 peelies on them. I also used a $1/1 q. I'm not sure it should have worked, but the cashier pushed it through. Even without that, it would be $.75 each.

Dillons

I'm hoping there are some unadvertised deals. This week's ad is a mirror of last week's. Still running the Daytona Promo.

The biggest deal in the ad for me was Sara Lee Buns $1.38, if you have the $1/1 q, good buy!! This is for white only--wheat buns are $1.99, so $.99 after q.

I found quite a few fantastic deals tonight.

Santa Cruz Lemonade on sale again 3/$5. Use Go Organic! q's for $.75/1 (makes it $1 off) and get them for $.67 each.

Lots of clearance at store on St. Louis. Emergen-C $4.89 (use $1/1 q), Rainbow Light Men's vitamins $4.99, etc.

I ran into quite a few manager specials, too.

Here is what I ended up with:

At Price Cutter I spent $26.50 (will get $10 MIR back)
6 pkgs All Natural (nitrite-free) bacon, 2 bags tortilla chips, , Sargento and Borden cheeses, 2 Creekstone Farm Natural Steaks, brown sugar, and 3 containers of organic strawberries (all 3 for $1--they are jam berries**wink**)

At Dillons I spent $29.72
Cascadian Farms froz. Broccoli (manager's special), 9 bottles Santa Cruz lemonade, organic milk, organic butter,
organic salad mix (manager's special and used q--total $.49!), Lays and Sunny D to donate, 2 boxes Emergen-C, 2 boxes Shiff Move Free (got them free!!), luna bar and think bar, 2 organic pears, bananas, Luzianne tea, bottle Kraft bbq sauce (free).
