Where Have I Been?!
I see change coming quickly in our future, so that may also decide the fate of this blog. I'll keep you posted.
Guest Post: Local Ad Match
I haven't done Walgreens or Target yet...) A little about my shopping habits: I mostly buy produce. Since I make most of my own foods (like bread, pancakes, side dishes), buy locally as much as is reasonable, and avoid dangerous ingredients (like aspartame, MSG, artificial color, hydrogenated oils), most things at the grocery store are ruled out. But I'm adding some things to the following list that are good buys, even if I may not purchase it myself. I shop for produce using Dr. Weil's rule, choosing what is available in this order: Fresh Organic Produce, Fresh Local Produce, Fresh store produce, Frozen Organic produce, Frozen conventional produce, canned or bottled or juiced produce last. Below are the lowest advertised prices for sale items. To use this list: 1. take it to each store listed, the lowest priced item is listed under its store 2. take it to Wal-Mart, buy what is listed and tell them to ad match at the register (note that WalMart does not carry all brands, such as Best Choice or Always Save) Harter House in Strafford red peppers 69 cents each bananas .39/lb peaches .89/lb (they are .79/lb at the Discount Grocery on the Marshfield square) black plums .89/lb blueberries $2/ pint honeydew $2 each apricots 1.99/lb Hiland Butter 1.79 /lb family pack split chicken breast .99/lb (limit 3) boneless skinless chicken breast 1.89/lb (limit 4) family pack chicken drums or thighs .99/lb Farmland roll or link sausage 3/$5 Best Choice American cheese slices $1.19 (limit 3) Pillsbury brownies 19 oz .89each (limit 5) Summer Fresh red or green grapes .87/lb Heirloom peaches 1.59/lb athena cantaloupe 1.99 each apricots 1.99/lb Back to School sale beats Wal-Mart 24 Crayola crayons .20 each 4oz Elmer's glue .20 each 70 sheets filler paper .50 each Liquid paper correct fluid .50 each Price Cutter red or green grapes .87/lb lettuce (green, red, or romaine) .99 each cucumbers .50 each family pack ground round $1.69/lb Best Choice apple juice .99 each Dillons bing cherries 2.29/lb rainier cherries 3.99/lb organic salads $3 cantaloupe 1.67 each strawberries 1.88/lb Philadelphia cream cheese .89 each Crest tpaste 6.4 oz $1 (use a coupon!) Buy 10 participating items and receive $5 off your total. Lots of items included. Sam’s club alert: Sam’s club has Bing Cherries for 1.96/lb and rainier cherries for 2.94/lb Also, they are currently stocking organic blackberries and organic raspberries, selling for less than the conventional berries at the grocery store. UPDATE on SmartSubs (and cheap coconut oil)
I ordered the Garden of Life coconut oil for $5.94. All shipping was free--shipped UPS. I ordered on the 10th. It was shipped the 15th and will be here on the 20th. My credit card has not yet been charged, so I will be keeping an eye on that.
Now for the free trial I was automatically signed up for. It actually sounded interesting, but I could not get signed in. After two emails requesting assistance, I just figured I better go ahead and cancel before I forget. I just called the toll-free number, told them to cancel, and it was done. I will also be watching out for any charges when the actual 14-day period is up.
But, if no weird charges show up, I think I will probably order again. Maybe have DH order with another email address--getting more coconut oil.
If I find something with a different offer, I can go ahead with that one with same info I just used.
For example, there are tons of Melissa and Doug toys, etc. that provides a free trial to Clever Island--a kids learning site.

Free Photo Package from Picture People
Since we accidentally skipped 6 mo. pics for DS, I might use this and capture 9 mo. pics instead!
SmartSubs.com-- Good way to buy cheap?
What led to this discovery was my hunt for a bargain on coconut oil. SmartSubs has Garden of Life EV Coconut Oil 16 oz. for $4.94 That's a great price! The catch is that you will be signed up for a free 14-day trial to a Savings Club. You can cancel at any time. Also, there are no shipping or tax fees! You can only sign up once for each offer, so, if you wanted to get the Chia Seeds 16 oz. that are only 5.94, you could not get them at the same time because they both have the same offer attached. I have heard you can order them separately though, using different email addresses. (I may try this after I see how the first order goes)
So, I am trying this out! I ordered the coconut oil. After I get my enrollment info, I will cancel. I'll let you know how it all goes. I did read reviews on the site and they (of course) are mixed.
Oh, and BTW, if you happen to find something more expensive you might try the code 5OFF50 to save $5 off $50, or MYSUBS (this one may be expired).
Walmart Clearance
On a slightly unrelated note, I was wondering how the Giovanni compared with Frontier prices. Walmart had it regularly for an 8.5 oz bottle of shampoo at $7.xx, clearanced at $5.xx
Frontier price is $4.77
HOWEVER, you can actually buy it by the gallon from Frontier! Doing so, would make the price (gallon= approx 15- 8.5oz bottles) $2.89/8.5oz bottle
I may just switch to Giovanni! (although for shampoo & conditioner it would be close to a $90 investment!! I better try out one bottle first, **wink**)
Oh, and Walmart had the Walmart brand Organic Coffee (just one style--Medium Roast) for $4.77 (normally $6)

It's not organic. Actually, 54oz of organic EV Coconut Oil from Nutiva, through Frontier is $22.

Now the trick will be to find it in our area. It is listed as being available at Kroger---so maybe Dillons too? Or possibly the health food store? Let me know if you see this brand somewhere!

Target to Start Price-Matching
There should be more info in the weekly ad.
They will price-match like items. You have to bring in the local competitor's ad.
I found a use for my raw cream cheese
The cheese is quite sour and I wasn't sure what I could get away with using it in.
I did mix it with some homemade strawberry jam, and the kids liked that.
However it was still pretty sour.
Tonight I made skillet cornbread, but half-way through I realized I had no milk!
I used the cream cheese watered down a little.
It turned out pretty good!
I hope to make sauerkraut and pickles with the whey this week. (or as soon as I have enough cukes accumulated)

I really hope we get the $1 off Tyson fresh chicken. I have a feeling in won't be in my paper, but maybe?
Do you see anything good?
Jessica reminded me about the canning jar and lid coupons. How excellent! Try to hold onto them to use with a sale if possible. It may depend on the expiration date, but I bet canning supplies will start going on sale in the next month?
How to use your Kashi Q's
Here's how:
Buy 2 boxes of Kashi cereal-- use 2 IP q's for $1.50/1 and a $.50/1 Target q and a B1G1 Free Target Q: gives you $.84 overage!! Do this for as many q's as you have.
Use the overage to buy Kashi cereal bars. Buy 2 and use the IP $1.50/1 for each, and use the Target q for $1/2. On sale for $2.50, so price could be $1 for 2 (minus the $.84 from above).
Also, look for peelies on the cereal you are buying. Many boxes have peelies for $1/1 on crackers, etc. Buy 2 boxes of crackers for $2.50 ea. Use 2 -- $1/1 q's and Target $1/2 q = $1 ea.
I knew I was saving those Kashi coupons for a reason!!

Grocery Highlights: Week 7/1--Updated
Wow! PC is running some great deals this week. LINK to ad.
Here is what I noted as good deals:
First off, there is a coupon in the ad for a $10 mail-in rebate off $10+ purchase of steak or seafood!!! You need to get the form at the Service Desk.
Creekstone Farms Beef Top Sirloin is $4.99/lb (I'll prob. get as close to 2 lbs. as possible)
Kraft Dressing $1.57, Use $1.50 or $1 off q's
Pace Picante 10/$10 use This is for the little jars, and the q's don't work =(
Borden Specialty Sliced Cheese (DH loves pepperjack) $1.79, use $1/1 q
Brown Sugar 2/$3 (there is a $.65/2 q on smartsource.com right now--Found $.30/1 insert q--doubles))
Smart Chicken, whole fryers $1.69/lb
Sargento Cheese Slice 2/$5, use $.40/1 q = $1.70ea
Farmland Bacon 2/$5 use Farmland q's (could be little as $1.50ea) Includes All Natural style (you just get 12 oz, instead of 16 oz pkg) This is a stock-up price.
Johnsonville Brats, Franks and Sausage are 2/$6 lots of q's, inc. for Turkey Sausage, etc.
Grande Tortilla Chips are 2/3.50 A few had $2 off Beef when you buy 2 peelies on them. I also used a $1/1 q. I'm not sure it should have worked, but the cashier pushed it through. Even without that, it would be $.75 each.
Dillons
I'm hoping there are some unadvertised deals. This week's ad is a mirror of last week's. Still running the Daytona Promo.
The biggest deal in the ad for me was Sara Lee Buns $1.38, if you have the $1/1 q, good buy!! This is for white only--wheat buns are $1.99, so $.99 after q.
I found quite a few fantastic deals tonight.
Santa Cruz Lemonade on sale again 3/$5. Use Go Organic! q's for $.75/1 (makes it $1 off) and get them for $.67 each.
Lots of clearance at store on St. Louis. Emergen-C $4.89 (use $1/1 q), Rainbow Light Men's vitamins $4.99, etc.
I ran into quite a few manager specials, too.
Here is what I ended up with:
At Price Cutter I spent $26.50 (will get $10 MIR back)
6 pkgs All Natural (nitrite-free) bacon, 2 bags tortilla chips, , Sargento and Borden cheeses, 2 Creekstone Farm Natural Steaks, brown sugar, and 3 containers of organic strawberries (all 3 for $1--they are jam berries**wink**)
At Dillons I spent $29.72

$5 Off Schwan's Order of $5 or More
I have been trying to do this for a few days. The only thing they have that I would use is the Lemon Italian Ice (or maybe the Strawberry Fruit Bars, but I wanted to keep it as close to $5 as possible). They have been Out of Stock for awhile. But, I thought I would post this deal, in case they are available in your area--or you want something else. =)
There is a $1 delivery fee. And, you may be asked to be put on the route. There is no obligation, however.
If the Lemon Ice was in stock, it would break down like this.
$5.99 - $5 + $1 + .08 tax = $2.07 for a 6-pack of 8oz. Lemon Italian Ice cups
Deal: Stacy's Pita Chips on Amazon
I tried it out with this combo:
12 pk 6 oz. bags $26.77
24 pk 1.5 oz bags $17.25
Total $44.02 - $15 = $29.02 + Free Shipping!
Play around with it. They have a lot of sizes and flavors.

Amazon: Organic Grocery Sale
I am very tempted by the Newman-O's or Fig Newman's, 12 pack at $2.40/pack. However, I know DH would finish off all 12 packs in.... oh, two weeks?
There is also 5 gallons of organic coconut oil at $160. That is about $.25/oz, if I did my math right. That's probably half the price of what you would pay for the biggest container through Frontier. I'm thinking coconut oil bath...

Grocery Highlights: Dillons & Target
Dillons
Did you print the Tyson Fresh Chicken q I posted a couple days ago? I hope so, because it's gone now. If you did, Dillons has chicken legs for $.99/lb. I bought four packs today and only paid between $.20 - $.25 each.
There is a promo this week, where if you buy 10 participating items, you get $3 off your order.
Here is what I did. (I'll list prices b4 discount--which is backward from how everyone else does it)
Kraft BBQ sauce $.99 Bought 6, used 6 $.75/1 q's = free
Ragu Sauce $1.66 Bought 3, used 3 $.60/1 q's = $.66 each
Multi-Grain Cheerios $2.66 Bought1, used $1/1 q, plus $.75 off e-q from Shortcuts = $.91
THEN I got $3 off my total bill (so the bbq sauce, especially, earned $$)
Cantaloupe $1.67
Organic Grapes still marked $1.99/lb Rang up $2.29/lb I asked to get free, per pricing accuracy policy (I can deal with a hateful cashier to get free grapes **eye roll**)
Organic Lemons $.44 each
Clif, Luna and Mojo Bars 10/$10 Use $1/3 q in Go Organic! Book (this is a good price--not great, only a few cents less than Target and Walmart)
There were organic canned beans in the clearance bin for $.99 each.
Here's an idea to get free/cheap sugar, also. There were q's on coupons.com a few weeks ago for Kool-aid $.50/10. IF you printed two of them (I did not, sigh, who knew!?), look for 10/$1 sale (would double and be free). Use those 2 q's AND the one in last week's paper for $2 off sugar wyb 20 pks kool-aid (does not specify type of sugar--brown, white..., or brand--organic, cane, etc.)
Target
I ran by there today in the hopes of snagging nearly free ice cream. It was all gone. However, keep your eyes peeled in case they restock (which they rarely do in cases of great deals). The Target Coupon Generator (find on Organic Grocery Deals) has a coupon for $1/1 Edy's or Dreyer's Ice Cream. There is a small size on sale for $1.19 right now.
Go to coupons.com (use in upper right, please!) and print the $5/1 for Pictureka. You can find the card game at Target (and prob. Walmart, etc.) for $6.99, so only $1.99 after q. I got one today. My kids love games.
Solo "Bare" brand eco-forward disposable cups/plates are on sale for $1.50 Find a $1/1 q HERE.
Post a comment or email if you want more info on how I found a q, etc.

Yum--Lunch
We had Greek Tortilla Pizza
Whole wheat tortillas. Spread olive oil over them. Layer sliced tomatoes around. Sprinkle with feta cheese (there is a $1 off q on Smartsource, or $.50/1 q from insert). Add olives (optional--they like, I don't)
Bake around 400, turn broiler on for a couple minutes to get crispy.
Yummy. I think I should have made more.
I forgot the best part!!! Sprinkle with fresh chopped basil after it comes out of the oven!
Nourishing Traditions
I found a blog that shares recipes, etc. along this vein. I'll link to my all-time favorite recipe from her-- Making Chicken Stock in the Crockpot. Be sure to go to her homepage, too and see newer articles.
It seems so obvious, but for some reason I found the idea of making my own chicken stock to be daunting. I kind of felt it was silly to cook a soup to make a soup. Thus, I purchased canned broth so I would have it on hand when I needed it. (I still have some in my emergency stockpile)
Now, my goal is to roast a chicken (whole or a couple split breasts, etc.) maybe once a week or so. (I absolutely LOVE roast chicken) I then just throw the carcass in the crockpot. I also liked the idea of keeping my vegetable remains in the fridge (tops of carrots, onion peel, etc.) and making use of them. I follow the instructions given pretty similarly.
The end product is 2 jars of GORGEOUS chicken broth! It just exudes health, homemade-ness, and deliciousness! This could easily be done with beef, etc.
Seriously, if I can get around to doing this--it has to be pretty darn simple.
FYI
A group is forming in SWMO to discuss the Nourishing Traditions (Weston A. Price) teachings, recipes, resources, etc.
Price Cutter Notes
I was at the store on Battlefield and they did not have Melissa's carrots. Instead, (as I expected) they put the sale sign on the Earthbound Farms carrots. However, they put the sale on the 1 lb. bag of whole carrots--which are always priced at $.99
Being the gutsy gal I am, I tracked down an employee (who happened to be the grocery manager). I explained that the sale was for baby carrots and asked if he would mark down the Earthbound Farms baby carrots (normally $1.99). He did not even hesitate and graciously marked them down for me. I then checked out using a coupon for $1/2. I paid $.50/bag for two bags of organic baby carrots!!
Restaurant.com 80% Off -- 4 Days Only
Use code DISH when checking out. Offer ends on 6/25
If you have not used Restaurant.com before, be sure to read the fine print, etc.
Here is some of it:
Limit one (1) redemption per party, per month, per restaurant
Limit one (1) Restaurant-Specific Certificate per redemption. Only one Restaurant-Specific Certificate can be used per party, even if the party is seated at separate tables and/or receives more than one check.
Use of Restaurant-Specific Certificates for alcoholic beverages is at the sole discretion of the restaurant.
Valid for parties of two (2) or more unless otherwise stated.
Valid for dine in only unless otherwise stated.
There is also a minimum amount you must spend to redeem the certificate, i.e. like your bill must be $35 to use a $25 gift cert (just an example).
You will also be charged an 18% tip rate--from what I understand.
Keep in mind, the certificates do not expire for one year, I do believe.
All in all, though, this could be a really sweet deal! There are only select restaurants participating in each area. When the set number of certificates sell out for a particular restaurant, then they are out.
Let us know if you try these out somewhere and how your experience goes!
(We are going on vacation to Memphis, so I might try to get one for that!)

New Walgreens Policy?
Went back for more tonight. I was informed that they would no longer take 2 coupons for a B1G1 sale--um ok. Weird they made this change mid-week. Then, when I tried to buy the Dry Idea, it took my coupons and then would not take the Walgreens coupon to give the sale price. I left buying nothing. It is becoming a bigger hassle every week. It will be interesting to see what experience other people are having.
I plan on emailing corporate.

Garden of Eatin tortilla chips are B1G1, they ring up half-price, so $1.64 ea
Fresh Gourmet salad toppers are $2/4 There are $.50/1 q's from insert. Makes them $1. These are tortilla strips, wonton strips, etc. I got DH some wasabi wonton strips for salads, etc.
Shortcuts.com had a $1/1 e-q for Cascadian Farms froz. veg. Froz. potatoes are on sale. I bought a bag of tater tots for $2.99, then subtract q = $1.99 (It didn't come off my card, so when I got home, just filled out the form and they gave me credit right away--might have even left q on there to use again?)
Fresh pineapples $2.49 Use IP for $.75/1 = $1.49
Muir Glen products on sale. I still had some IPs that expired end of May. Since Dillon's takes expired coupons for up to 2 weeks, I am glad I held onto them! I got organic tomato paste for $.19
Daisy Sour Cream $1.69 Use insert q for $.50/1 = $.69
Target
I found Archer Farms organic apple/grape juice on a clearance end cap (in froz. section) for $1.88 for 1qt. (Later, I saw Old Orchard organic apple juice 2 qt. at Dillons for $3.49?--Use $1/2 q to get 4 qt. for $6 or $1.50/qt....if I calculated that right)
Kashi Cereal bars still $2.88 Use the new $1.50/1 IP q
I posted the new q's on Stonyfield Farms website. When I saw they had a q for $1 off Annie's fruit snacks I ran for them. They aren't on sale ($3.59), but these are the best fruit snacks I've ever had.
Market Pantry Wild Alaskan Keta Salmon is $7.99 (usually $8.99)
There are other Target deals floating about for Degree deodorant, Ziploc bags, Special K, etc.
I previously posted sales on Method products and Tom's of Maine deo and toothpaste.

Sale on Teva Sandals!
Use code FATHERSDAY09 for free shipping!
I have to say, aside from my adidas', I have had most of my shoes for years. Within the last couple weeks, I have bought 3 pairs of Simple Shoes (mary jane style, suede sneakers, slippers), a pair of mary jane Crocs, and now the Teva Olawahus. I am super pumped to have cute feet! (and I probably spent on 5 pairs what DH spends on one!)
